Charles Watson - Chairman

A history graduate from Kings College London University, Charles worked for 23 years at leading global financial and corporate public relations consultancy Financial Dynamics, serving 11 years as CEO. In 2006 he sold the business to US-based consulting group FTI Consulting and subsequently served for three years on FTI’s group executive board as the CEO of its Strategic Communications Division - a position he stepped down from in 2011.

He currently chairs a variety of business and charitable trusts which, in addition to New College of the Humanities, include marketing services group the Karma Communications Group; events and conference organiser World Trade Group and the Bedales Schools Development Trust. He is also a Governor of Bedales School.

Matthew Batstone

Matthew Batstone has an MBA with distinction from INSEAD and has held senior positions in blue chip companies, including The Economist Group, Carlton Communications and J Walter Thompson, and a number of start-ups. In addition, he is a governor at one of the UK’s premium independent schools with oversight of recruitment of pupils and external relations and consequently has an excellent understanding of issues around recruitment in the education market. He has an English degree from Clare College, Cambridge.

Roy Brown

Following a successful career in the computer industry, Roy Brown co-founded a major worldwide computer services company with offices in 21 countries. He has since followed a successful career as a venture capitalist. He has also devoted many years to charitable activities, including as founder and former chairman of World Population Foundation in the Netherlands. He is the immediate past-president of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) and for the past six years has been head of the IHEU delegation at the UN in Geneva. He has a degree in Engineering from the University of London

Jeremy Gibbs

Jeremy Gibbs joined NCH from a specialist venture capital consultancy, where he was CEO. He is also deputy chairman of an AIM-listed scientific instrument maker and was for four years chairman of a NASDAQ-listed e-learning developer. He has over 30 years’ management experience, including start-ups, blue chips and university spin-outs. He has a degree from Balliol College, Oxford.

Professor A C Grayling

AC Grayling MA, DPhil (Oxon), FRSL, FRSA is one of Britain’s foremost academics and public intellectuals and he was Professor of Philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is also a Supernumerary Fellow of St Anne’s College, Oxford. He has written and edited over 20 books on philosophy and other subjects and is a frequent broadcaster and writer for national newspapers and other publications. He sits on the editorial boards of several academic journals, and for nearly ten years was the Honorary Secretary of the principal British philosophical association, the Aristotelian Society.
