Why New College of the Humanities?
-
1. An outstanding academic experience
-
NCH has a world-class team of Professors with a stellar reputation for academic excellence, supported by an enthusiastic, talented team of tutors, lecturers and other teaching staff. All of them are committed to teaching and research.
Our Professors, lecturers and tutors are international experts in their chosen fields. You will hear lectures by these leading academics and have the opportunity to question them. You can attend some Professorial lectures even if they are not in your own subject.
-
2. Diploma of New College of the Humanities
-
In addition to your University of London degree, you will study for the Diploma of New College of the Humanities. The NCH Diploma has been carefully developed to give our students an unrivalled edge in the modern world; by the time you graduate you will have gained a dynamic and wide-ranging set of transferable skills. Not only will the subjects studied here compliment your main degree subject and future employability, they will also have a positive impact on your personal development, providing a set of skills that will allow you to engage positively with the world around you.
We have received widespread praise and recognition from key employers in support of the Diploma. Many of these employers have become increasingly disappointed by the calibre of graduate currently being produced by top UK universities. There has been a growing call for well-rounded graduates that are able to quickly put the skills and knowledge that they have learnt during their academic studies into problem solving, workplace and social situations.
-
3. A more personal approach
-
One-to-one tutorials are becoming a rarity in UK higher education, but they are central to the NCH approach. You will have two one-hour tutorials every week, and half of your tutorials will be one-to-one with a tutor. We offer one of the best staff-student ratios in the UK and extra contact hours, so you can be sure of personal support for your studies.
-
4. A great preparation for your career
-
NCH has designed employability into its courses. Our combined academic and professional courses give our graduates immediate career skills. You can intern during your vacations, and you have access to a comprehensive careers service. Your University of London degree is highly valued by employers.
-
5. Live and Study in the heart of London
-
A successful undergraduate career is not only about intellectual development. For many people, this is a critical period in their lives when they decide what kind of person they will be and what their core values are. It is also a time when they meet the people who will be their lifelong friends, so the social experience is as fulfilling and exciting as the educational one.
London is a wonderfully cosmopolitan city, with students and citizens from all over the world, and with restaurants, music, languages, entertainments and facilities to match. The social and cultural life on offer is an important part of an education in London, and students at NCH will be encouraged to take full advantage of it.
The College is centrally located in Bloomsbury, the university district, providing ample opportunities for meeting students from the many other colleges in the same area.
-
6. You will not be lost in the crowd
-
NCH is smaller than most universities. As a student at NCH your experience will be personal, not anonymous. Our members of staff are friendly, responsive and available. We will help you make the most of your time and opportunities. You will get to know other students and your tutors in the College’s common rooms and you will soon be on a first name basis with everyone.
-
7. Exceptional resources
-
As a student at NCH you will share many of the resources of the University of London: the exceptional library in Senate House, the University of London Union with its many societies and sports activities*, the opportunity to learn or improve language skills and the vast range of cultural and entertainment opportunities in London.
(* a fee applies, currently £20 a year)
-
8. You can apply now for 2012 entrance
-
You can apply direct to NCH at any time before term starts. We do not use the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) and you can apply to NCH in addition to your five UCAS choices.
Our Scholarships and Exhibitions ensure that finance should not be a barrier to any talented UK student who wants to apply. Almost 30% of NCH students in 2012 will have all or most of their fees paid for them through a Scholarship or an Exhibition.
We accept applications at any time of the year, and we aim to give you a decision within 4-6 weeks. As well as your personal details and academic record, you need to supply a reference and a piece of written work. You can apply at the same time as you apply to other universities, or you can apply separately.
We do not use the Clearing process, but we are open to applications until our places are full, so you can apply to us during Clearing. Clearing starts immediately after A-level results are released in mid-August. We run a course vacancy hotline and online enquiry system throughout the Clearing period so you can easily contact us.
